Four Design Links: December 3, 2009

An eclectic Four Design Links this week. Philosophy, stress management, and a bit of web design tech to round things off.

1. A visual interpretation of Delueze and Guattari's A Thousand Plateaus

2. Time in nature makes us more caring

If we want people to do more good in the world, perhaps greater exposure to nature is the ticket. According to this study, you don't even have to be outside to experience the effect. Some outdoor wallpaper and plants can help make one more prone to care about others.

3. Delegate

This is timely. Feeling overwhelmed? Perhaps you need to learn how to delegate.

4. Google Analytics goes asynchronous

Google's new update promises "faster tracking code load times" and "enhanced data collection & accuracy". Time to revise those CMS templates?

Four Design Links: September 24, 2009

Four Design Links is your weekly dose of the latest design news and research.

1. iStockphoto to Sell Logos

Big news this week from iStockphoto: the site plans to offer logos for sale in the near future. Commenters on their forum seem to favor the deal, while designers are (not surprisingly) much less enthused.

iStockphoto.com is selling logos

To their credit, iStockphoto is trying something different with the logos they plan to sell. Logos will be unique items, only sold once apiece. In addition, they will cost much more than stock photos. Whereas a decent sized image might run $7-$10, a logo could run $100-$750.

But tell me, who is going to buy these things and who is going to supply them? Is there really such a thing as a stock logo? I think we know the answer...

Four more Design Links this week. Same bat-time, same bat-channel.

1. Measuring the quality of visitors rather than the quantity

Marketing blogger Helge Tennø raises an interesting question: in the age of social media, what are we missing from our current web analytics?

Helge Tennø: Quality vs. Quantity'

It is easy to measure page views and sales, but that still leaves a lot of room in between. How do we track the number and activity of different user types that make online communities work? There's no good answer yet, but it's something to chew on.

Twitter, do you speak it?

What's the meaning of the strange punctuation you find on Twitter these days? DLB helps you speak like a native by deciphering some Twitter shorthand.

Because Twitter’s features were designed to be accessible via SMS codes, the service can be pretty unintuitive without a little study.

Twitter uses a special command syntax, both internal to the application as well as through other services using the API. If you encounter some text with a strange prefix applied, and it doesn’t read like typical TXT-speak, that’s probably what you’re looking at. Today we'll cover a few that you're likely to run across.
