Four Design Links is a review of the design- and ethics-related stories we've been reading online this week. This week: Recovering from presentation problems, a new Tumblr theme, Getting clients to pay your invoices, and a nifty URL service.
1. How Steve Jobs beats presentation panic
Last week, problems with the new iPhone presentation seemed to garner more press than the device itself.
But Jobs is a master presenter who handled the disruption well. In this vein, MacWorld has a good article with tips on how to recover from presentation stumbles.
2. Wordographic
Wordographic is a minimal Tumblr template with some nice features: rich media integration, AJAX effects, 2- and 3-column layouts, to name a few.
It’s not free (though it’s only $9 — pretty cheap IMO) and it seems to have a few bugs yet, but for those looking to develop a blog that manages large blocks of images and text with ample whitespace, this might be worth a look.
3. Dealing with Clients Who Refuse to Pay
Smashing Magazine is back with another great roundup of advice and resources for freelancers seeking their due compensation.
One point I wish the article would have stated more clearly is that the best way to deal with this kind of problem is to avoid it in the first place. If you get to the point where the client has your work but does not want to pay you, that’s a tough spot — and it’s probably your fault. Spell everything out in a contract and stick to it. You can be firm about your arrangement and still be nice — it’s called being professional.
4. urli.st
urli.st is a clever little URL service that lets you send a list of links to someone in a compact URL. Neat.
